WÀFCON 2026: Banyana Banyana Coach Confirms Contract Resolution

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has officially confirmed that her long-running contract dispute with the South African Football Association (SAFA) has been resolved, paving the way for her full return to the dugout ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ellis’ contract status had remained uncertain since the conclusion of the 2025 WAFCON qualifiers, despite her serving in various coaching capacities since 2016.

She initially took charge on an interim basis following the departure of Vera Pauw before being handed a permanent role two years later.

The celebrated coach has now signed a new deal and resumed duties as South Africa intensifies preparations for an international friendly match against Morocco scheduled for December 2.

“Yeah, now everything is sorted,” Ellis confirmed during an interview on Game On with Thabiso on Radio 2000.

“I’m very happy that it’s sorted, and I must say a big thank you to the CEO [Lydia Monyepao] for understanding and support. I really appreciate it.”

Ellis also reflected on her decision to step away temporarily, insisting it was necessary to protect her values and avoid creating tension within the team setup.

“It was a tough decision to make [not to go to Congo], but sometimes you have to stand up for what you feel is right. I needed to make sure that was right,” she explained.

She clarified that although negotiations were nearing completion at the time, choosing not to sit on the bench for the WAFCON qualifier second leg was based on professionalism and respect for the squad.

“We had sort of agreed, but I didn’t feel it was proper to sit on the bench. I had not been in training… and I felt that the distraction for such a big game was not worth it.”

With her contract saga now resolved, Ellis is fully focused on steering the reigning African champions toward another successful campaign on the continental stage and further strengthening women’s football development in South Africa.

Banyana Banyana will now look to build momentum ahead of a crucial year that includes preparations for WAFCON 2026 and future global competitions.
