The Confederation of African Football has approached Algeria to step in as host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following a request for postponement from the original host nation, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In what observers have described as a dramatic development, CAF is understood to have opened discussions with the North African country after the initially designated host cited logistical challenges and formally sought a delay of the tournament.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) remains a critical fixture on the continental calendar, with the 2026 edition set to serve as the qualification tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place in Brazil.

While CAF has yet to make an official public announcement confirming a change of venue, sources indicate that Algeria is being considered as a viable alternative due to its existing infrastructure and recent experience hosting major continental competitions.

Any decision to relocate the tournament would need swift ratification to ensure that preparation timelines, stadium readiness, and team logistics are not compromised ahead of the qualifiers for the global showpiece in 2027.
