WAFCON 2026: Six World Cup Tickets Up for Grabs As Nigeria Target 11th Title

The Super Falcons of Nigeria and eleven other African teams will compete not only for continental glory at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) but also for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the four semi-finalists from next year’s WAFCON will automatically qualify for the World Cup. Two additional teams will earn a chance through the intercontinental playoffs, mirroring the qualification format used for the 2027 edition to be my hosted by Brazil.

The twelve teams confirmed for the 16th edition of WAFCON are Nigeria (defending champions), Morocco (hosts), South Africa, Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Tanzania, and debutants Malawi and Cape Verde.

Super Falcons Eye 11th Continental Crown

The record nine-time African champions, Nigeria, will head into the tournament as favorites. The Super Falcons, who have featured in every Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991, are determined to defend their title and extend their dominance on the continent.

Hosts Morocco Target Historic Triumph

Morocco, hosting the WAFCON for the third consecutive time, will seek to end their wait for a maiden continental title. The Atlas Lionesses have reached the last two finals losing to Ghana and South Africa but remain one of the continent’s most improved sides.

South Africa, Ghana Among Key Contenders

Reigning champions Banyana Banyana of South Africa are also among the strong contenders, hoping to clinch a second consecutive title after finally breaking their finals jinx in 2022.

Ghana, who reached three of the first five WAFCON finals but are yet to lift the trophy, will also look to build on their third-place finish from the last edition.

Meanwhile, Kenya and Burkina Faso make their return to the competition after years of absence, while Senegal, Algeria, and Tanzania continue to establish themselves as rising forces in African women’s football.

The 2026 WAFCON the 16th edition of the continental showpiece is scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026, with matches to be played across major Moroccan cities.
