WAFCON-Winning Coach Justine Madugu Gets Upgraded Cash Reward from Nigerian Government
By Niyi Busari
Justine Madugu, head coach of Super Falcons, has received an enhanced financial reward from the Federal Government following the team’s triumphant campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Madugu guided the Super Falcons to a historic comeback victory over Morocco in the final on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Rabat. Nigeria overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Atlas Lionesses 3-2, clinching a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Upon the team’s return to Abuja, President Bola Tinubu hosted the victorious squad and announced a $50,000 cash reward for each member of the technical crew, including Coach Madugu, in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
However, fresh reports indicate that Madugu's reward has been significantly upgraded. According to international sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, writing via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Madugu will now receive a sum exceeding $100,000—the same amount awarded to each of the players for their heroics at the tournament.
Obayiuwana, who extensively covered the tournament for his global audience, attributed the update to Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission.
The development reflects increased recognition of the pivotal role played by the coaching staff in Nigeria’s continued dominance of African women’s football.
