Why Egypt Must Remove Seven Stars From Its World Cup Jersey- FIFA
By Niyi Busari
Egypt have been instructed by FIFA to make changes to their official World Cup kit ahead of their opening Group G fixture against Belgium, including the removal of the seven stars displayed above the national team crest, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The stars, which symbolize Egypt's record seven Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles, have long served as a proud representation of the country's status as the most successful nation in the history of the continental championship.
However, FIFA's tournament regulations require participating teams to comply with specific kit and branding guidelines for World Cup competitions. As a result, the Egyptian Football Association has been directed to remove the stars from the jersey that will be worn during the tournament.
In addition, FIFA has reportedly requested a change to the gold-coloured names and numbers featured on the shirt, ensuring they meet the governing body's visibility and uniformity standards.
The decision means Egypt will take to the field in a modified version of their traditional kit when they face Belgium in their World Cup opener.
While the removal of the stars may disappoint some supporters, it does not diminish Egypt's remarkable continental achievements. The Pharaohs remain Africa's most decorated national team, having won the AFCON title seven times — in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
FIFA's regulations on stars and championship insignia differ from those used in continental competitions. Traditionally, stars displayed on World Cup jerseys are reserved for FIFA World Cup triumphs or must comply with specific approval processes set by the governing body. This has occasionally led to disputes and kit modifications involving national teams across different tournaments.
Egypt's focus will now shift to their campaign on the pitch as they prepare for a challenging Group G schedule. After facing Belgium in their opening match, the Pharaohs will also take on New Zealand and Iran as they bid to secure a place in the knockout stages.
Despite the kit adjustment, Egypt will arrive at the tournament carrying the weight of a proud footballing history and the ambition of making a significant impact on the global stage.
