World Championships: Team Nigeria Departs For Tokyo Today Sampson Adedeji Nigeria’s contingent of athletes and officials will depart the country today (Tuesday) for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 13, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

While some US-based athletes have already arrived in Tokyo, the departing group includes a blend of athletes and officials.

Last week, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria unveiled a 15-athlete roster comprising seven women and eight men.

Leading the squad is 100m hurdles world record holder and 2022 world champion, Tobi Amusan, aiming to rediscover her top form.

She is joined by shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and 400m hurdles prospect Ezekiel Nathaniel.

Long jump star Ese Brume, the African record holder with a leap of 7.17m, also makes the list.

Tokyo has historically been a successful venue for Brume, raising hopes of another podium finish.

Other athletes named for the championships include Samuel Ogazi (400m), Kayinsola Ajayi (100m), Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons (discus), Prestina Ochonogor (long jump), Obiageri Amaechi (discus), Charles Godfred (long jump), Rosemary Chukwuma (100m), Oyesade Olatoye (hammer), Israel S. Okon (100m), and Chidi Okezie (400m).

Amusan remains the only Nigerian to have ever won a world title, courtesy of her record-breaking run in Oregon, USA, at the 2022 edition.
