World Cup 2026: Cape Verde Camp Thrown Into Turmoil As Captain Faces Rape Investigation

The Cabo Verde national team has been hit by controversy ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after captain Ryan Mendes became the subject of a police investigation over allegations of rape and physical assault, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

A woman has accused the experienced forward of raping and assaulting her during the national team's tour of New Zealand in March.

 According to the allegations, Mendes allegedly forced his way into her hotel room before carrying out the assault.

The complainant claims to possess medical and forensic evidence to support her allegations.

The case has been under investigation by New Zealand Police since April. Complaints have also been lodged with FIFA and the Cape Verde Football Federation regarding the incident.

As of the time of reporting, no charges have been announced, and no court has ruled on the allegations. 

The investigation remains ongoing, while neither FIFA nor the Cape Verde Football Federation has publicly announced any disciplinary measures against the player.

The development has cast uncertainty over the Cabo Verde camp as the team continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the outcome of the investigation expected to determine any further action.
