World Cup 2026: Thiaw Threatens To Quit Senegal Over Contract, Unpaid Salaries

Barely two weeks before the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, crisis appears to be brewing in the camp of Senegal’s Teranga Lions as head coach Pape Thiaw has reportedly threatened to walk away from the national team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Thiaw guided Senegal to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and has remained one of the key figures behind the team’s recent success.

However, reports emerging from the team’s camp indicate that the coach has been operating without an official contract since February 2026 following the expiration of his previous deal with the Senegalese Football Federation.

It was also gathered that the former Senegal international has not received any salary payment since the expiration of his contract, a situation that has reportedly created tension between him and the football authorities.

The development is coming at a crucial period as Senegal intensify preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with fears that the uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation could affect the team’s concentration ahead of the tournament.

The Senegalese Football Federation is yet to officially respond to the reports regarding Thiaw’s contract situation and unpaid wages.
