FIFA is expected to deliver its verdict next month on Nigeria’s petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) arising from their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff encounter, senior football officials have told Daily Post.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) filed a formal complaint alleging that DR Congo fielded several ineligible players during the playoff match held in Rabat, Morocco, in November 2025. Nigeria has called on FIFA to investigate the matter and impose sanctions, including the possible disqualification of DR Congo from the World Cup qualification process.

DR Congo secured progression to the Intercontinental Playoffs after defeating Nigeria 4–3 on penalties, following a 1–1 draw after extra time. They are currently scheduled to face the winner of the playoff tie between Jamaica and New Caledonia in March, with the match set to take place in Mexico.

Sources close to the process say there are “positive indications” surrounding Nigeria’s petition, although FIFA has yet to make any official statement on the matter.
