World Cup Ticket: History Beckons For Cape Verde After 1-0 Triumph Over Cameroon

Cape Verde have moved to within one victory of securing a historic maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup after a surprise 1-0 win over continental giants Cameroon in Praia, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Dalion Livramento’s brilliant solo goal in the second half sealed a crucial three points for the Blue Sharks, who now top Group D with a four-point lead over the Indomitable Lions, with only two matches remaining in the African qualifiers.

The result puts Cape Verde in control of their World Cup destiny, needing just one more win to guarantee their place at the 2026 finals — a remarkable achievement for the island nation should they succeed.

In other qualifying action, reigning African champions Senegal pulled off a dramatic comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat DR Congo 3-2. Pape Matar Sarr scored the decisive goal, propelling the Teranga Lions to the top of their group.

Meanwhile, Egypt missed a golden opportunity to confirm early qualification after being held to a goalless draw away to Burkina Faso. The Pharaohs still lead their group but will now need to wait at least another matchday to secure their place.

Only the winners of each of the nine African qualifying groups are guaranteed a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The four best-ranked second-place teams will enter a playoff round, with the winner advancing to an intercontinental tournament for a final qualification berth.
