World Cup Winning Coach Emerges Favourite For Ghana Job After Addo Sacking

The Ghana Football Association is reportedly close to appointing former Germany head coach Joachim Low as manager of the Black Stars, in a move aimed at reviving the team’s fortunes ahead of upcoming international fixtures and the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Reports from local media indicate that negotiations with the 2014 World Cup-winning coach have intensified in recent days, with both parties nearing an agreement on personal terms. The 66-year-old is expected to sign a short-term contract focused on stabilizing the national team and guiding them through the qualification campaign.

The development follows the recent dismissal of Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties after a run of four consecutive friendly defeats left Ghana languishing at 74th in the FIFA rankings. In an official statement, the GFA confirmed the decision and expressed appreciation for Addo’s contributions, while indicating that a new technical direction for the team would soon be announced.

Although the association has yet to formally confirm Low’s appointment, multiple reports suggest he is the leading candidate to take charge ahead of a crucial run of fixtures, including a high-profile encounter against England national football team.

Low, who managed Germany national football team from 2006 to 2021, enjoyed a highly successful tenure, highlighted by winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup and securing a third-place finish at the 2010 edition. He has been out of management since stepping down in 2021 but has previously acknowledged receiving several offers to return to coaching.

In a past interview, Low indicated a renewed openness to taking on a national team role, citing his extensive experience in preparing teams for major international tournaments.

Ghana have been drawn into a challenging group that includes England, Croatia, and Panama. They are scheduled to open their campaign against Panama on June 18, before facing England—managed by Thomas Tuchel—on June 23.

The potential appointment of Low signals Ghana’s intent to strengthen its technical leadership as it seeks to regain competitiveness on the global stage.
