World U20 Championships: Nigeria Advances on Multiple Fronts After Record-Breaking Relay Run

Team Nigeria delivered another impressive performance at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, USA, setting a new African U20 record in the mixed 4x100m relay while securing qualification places in the women's 400m and men's triple jump, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian quartet of Tejiri Godwin, Rosemary Nwankwo, Perfect Faye and Miracle Ezechukwu clocked 41.91 seconds to finish second in their heat and qualify for the final in record-breaking fashion.

After entering the final exchange behind the leading teams, anchor runner Miracle Ezechukwu produced a remarkable closing leg, overtaking Germany and closing rapidly on the United States before crossing the finish line. His outstanding 10.05-second anchor split helped Nigeria register a Nigerian U20 record and the fastest time ever recorded by an African U20 team in the mixed 4x100m relay.

The performance positions Nigeria among the leading contenders for medals as the team prepares for the final.

In the women's 400m, Jecinta Lawrence and Faith Ezechukwu both progressed to the semifinals after strong performances in their respective heats.

Lawrence fought hard to the finish, clocking 53.97 seconds to share third place with Germany's Eni Kuske, with both athletes awarded the same time. Faith Ezechukwu also secured automatic qualification after finishing third in her heat in 54.38 seconds.

Nigeria's encouraging campaign continued in the men's triple jump, where Precious Opinion produced a personal best leap of 16.02m during the qualification round.

Opinion surpassed the automatic qualifying mark of 16.00m to book his place in the final as one of the top five qualifiers, strengthening Nigeria's hopes of another podium finish.

The latest achievements build on the country's growing momentum in Eugene, following Jessica Oji's qualification for the women's shot put final after leading the qualification round with a throw of 17.56m.

With several athletes advancing across multiple events and a record-breaking relay team heading into the final, Team Nigeria will enter the next stage of the championships with increasing confidence and realistic medal ambitions.
